Opening the Voice

The voice has always been the primary instrument. It is such a powerful instrument that we can, for instance, pick up the telephone and hear a friend say “Hello” and know far more than just the greeting, just from the person’s voice. We can tell if there is an emergency without needing the words that define the situation. The voice is the only instrument with this kind of power.
The voice is based in the throat chakra, which is the seat of creativity. The bible states that “in the beginning was the word”. Many other texts state that the universe was put in motion through sound. We say “Please bring me the water” and fail to realize that we have actually moved something with the power of voice. Therefore it behooves us to realize the enormous power of this instrument.
Many of our actions are conditioned by unwritten laws that shape the way we act, especially in public. We are usually not even aware of the way that we have been conditioned. The way we act, stand, talk, manifest ourselves in the world, and especially generate art; all of these are conditioned by society.
Voice conditioning, one of the most subtle and harmful types of conditioning in the world, is usually caused by one of four sources: Family, especially parents; Siblings; Teachers; and society in general and the entertainment industry in particular. A parent saying to a child something like: “Shut up! you can’t sing!” is causing incredible harm to the spirit, yet this takes place often, and usually unconsciously. Siblings and teachers also cause this kind of wound, which can have far-reaching consequences.
The result is that people grow up and pass long periods of time under the impression that they are ‘tone deaf’, when in fact this condition is extremely rare. In over twenty years of voice teaching and coaching I have not run into even one person who is truly tone deaf.
Hard to believe? Try a thought experiment. someone says to you, “You like spaghetti?” and you can tell that it’s a question rather than a statement. How? because you detected a rising inflection in the other person’s voice that let you know that it was a question. The rising inflection is a change in note, and you detected it! From there, it’s a question only of practice with a teacher who is both competent and armed with compassion and a good sense of humor!
No one gets mad at a child that has not yet learned to ride a bicycle; one day you don’t have it, and the next day you feel the feeling of balance and you ride. That does not mean that you are going to win the Tour De France that day; it means that you have started on a journey of adventure. Likewise, the first time that you realize that you just heard a note and sang it fairly accurately does not mean that you are going to sing the tenor lead in the Opera; it means that you have a wonderful adventure before you, one that will carry you through much of your life, if not all of it. We don’t get angry at a young child that plays with blocks, and say “No, no, no, you don’t put the A block on top of the B block!” Consider the adventure of music a game, one that doesn’t earn a slap on the wrist if you don’t do it ‘right’, and find a teacher that is competent, patient, open-minded, and has a sense of humor, perhaps the most important attribute of a good teacher!
The voice is an amazing instrument, and the outlook is to play, like a child, and to remember that all great artists started somewhere, and that most if not all great artists were ridiculed by the establishment when they started.
So Opening the Voice means to have the spirit of openness and adventure, to sing out and not be discouraged by anybody, to have fun, to play like a child and enjoy this wonderful power. Experiment! listen with an open mind to all kinds of singing, such as overtone music from Tibet and Tuva, choral singing from Bulgaria, and great artists such as Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra, and learn to enjoy their differences and styles; and try imitating sounds that you can hear. The voice is such a flexible instrument that it has possibilities of imitating all kinds of things; musical instruments, machines, animals, and other people!
The next step in opening the voice is to sing between a medium-soft and a medium-loud volume, bearing in mind that normal speech takes place at a soft volume; and so when we sing we raise our voice so that we can hear ourselves. If we can’t hear ourselves, it’s very hard to sing in tune, and we also can not get all the effects that the medium volume offers.
Of course, this does not mean that we walk into a crowded public library and blast off with “Melancholy Baby”. There are appropriate places to experiment with the voice, and one of the best involves going into nature, especially in a place that is solitary; this enables us to sing loudly, to experiment, and to have bystanders not think that we are crazy. It also eliminates the conditioning that happens when someone listens to us when we are experimenting or practicing. When you know that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE is listening, you can be totally uninhibited with the voice. That is one reason that people like to sing in the car and in the shower; we can be sure (usually) that no one is listening. The shower, of course, has another virtue; it’s resonant! Likewise, all sorts of places such as stairwells, underpasses, and other enclosed places can be amazingly resonant; experiment!
Please experiment also with the ability of the voice to take on any role, from just holding the tonic note through harmony and bassline to lead.
The spirit of uninhibited play is the most important part of artistic endeavor.
The voice has another ability that puts it in a different class from any other instrument; it can express in words. A song can use intelligible words, or it can use words that don’t mean anything, but provide rhythmic scansion. In India, a song with nonsense words used for rhythmic purposes is called a Tarana. There are other sounds, such as Bija mantras; the classic one is OM. The Native Americans have another technique, sometimes called Burthèn; this is a song in which the text, in meaningless words, nonetheless has a meaning understood to the singers, and sometimes to the audience. The singers may be singing something that sounds like “heya heya, ahh, heya hey” but the meaning may concern the healing abilities of bears.
Again, the focus is on experimentation without criticism, including self-criticism. There is a place for criticism, but it’s not in the beginning stages of composition. Avoid analysis and just create; You can always change it later on.

A lista que se segue apresenta o número de dias de tratamento que requer a cura das principais doenças:
1. Pressão Alta – 30 dias
2. Gastrite – 10 dias
3. Diabetes – 30 dias
4. Obstipação – 10 dias
5. Câncer – 180 dias
6. Tuberculose – 90 dias
7. Os doentes com artrite devem continuar o tratamento por apenas 3 dias na primeira semana e, desde a segunda semana, diariamente.

This July we will be having an extraordinary busy month with lots of yoga, Music, Culinary and shamanistic rituals. Montino will be arriving in late June with his partner who will be playing tabla. July 5 Danny Paradise arrives for a workshop that is still being determined however it may last for two weeks depending upon demand. July 14th is Forest’s 60th Birthday and it will be a extraordinary music event with Montino Bourbon and band, including, Adonai and Samara from Alfenas, wonderful musicians that many of you know. Of course we are waiting to see if Danny is going to be there as well as of course Forest with his harmonicas. This is only the beginning and we are confident that we are going to be totally full. However this year instead of just a weekend with Danny we are going to extend his stay here for at least ten days. After that……at the end of the month arrives Beto, our great friend and shaman. Check out our new addition….hammock over untroubled waters.
